	Which type of cable do I choose?? Selecting the proper cable type can be a confusing process. Network cables typically come with different ratigns such as CMP, CM, CMR and various other designations. These ratings come from the National Electrical Code (NEC) which is published by the National Fire Protection Association. CM - CM cables are for general purpose wiring. They are to be used in all other areas where CMR (Riser) and CMP (Plenum) type cables are not required. CM cables are resistant to the spread of fire and are required to pass the UL Vertical Tray Flame Test (UL 1581). CMR - CMR cables are typically called Riser cables. They are permitted in all in-wall applications that do not require plenum grade (CMP) cables. These cables are designed to prevent fire from spreading from floor to floor in a building and are suitable for vertical cable runs. CMR can be used as a substitute for lower grade cables such as CM, CMG, CL2, CL3, CMX and various other lower cable grades. The price difference between CMR and CM cables is usually quite marginal so some cable manufacturers are dropping CM production and producing only CMR grade cable and higher. CMP - CMP cables are Plenum cables meeting the CMP requirements. These cables can be installed in ducts and plenums without the use of conduit. They are built for fire resistance, low toxin and low smoke production. At this time CMP is the highest grade of cable and may be used as a substitute for CMR, CM, CMG, CL2, CL3, CMX and various other lower cable grades. If a CMP cable is required no other cable type may be substituted in its place.
